A few weeks ago, I signed an agreement with the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation (TRBF) to jointly offer services to families in West Dallas at the Texas Rangers Youth Academy in West Dallas at the Mercy Street Ministries Campus presented by Toyota North America. During the last year the TRBF has hosted activities for youth serving over 3,000 children and youth through baseball activities.
The TRBF, under the leadership of Karin Morris, executive director, is teaching baseball skills like batting, fielding, catching, throwing, and all the skills you and I learned when we played as youngsters. Texas Rangers baseball players and coaches are dedicating their personal time to come and work with youth in West Dallas. I was a pitcher and played shortstop and third base. What did you play?
Along with these skills, the Rangers are helping youth focus on school and exposing these youth to opportunities related to higher education while also building baseball skills and learning life skills.
Buckner will provide services through an extension of the Buckner Family Hope Center at Bachman Lake and Wynnewood. We will use the facilities of theTexas Rangers Youth Academy and collaborate with community partners like the DISD, Mercy Street Ministries, Serve West Dallas, Builders of Hope, Major League Baseball, Toyota North America, City Councilman Omar Narvaez, Dallas Housing Authority, and other West Dallas Community Leaders. We will work with families to strengthen them through a variety of classes and family coaching.
With the first pitch of the new baseball season just a few weeks away, we are absolutely thrilled at this opportunity to collaborate with the Texas Rangers Baseball Club to serve children, youth, and families in West Dallas. If you would like to learn more about ways to support this opportunity, please call 214-758-8000 and ask about volunteering or supporting the collaboration with the Texas Rangers or go to www.buckner.org and look for volunteering opportunities or ways to donate.
